Practice proper management of spent wipes and rags for a safer workplace!
Do you know if your spent disposable wipers and wiper rags contain hazardous substances? If they do, their presence can pose safety hazards to employees. The good news is, with a little precaution you can limit or even eliminate your employees' exposure to hazardous residue on spent disposable wipers and wiper rags. The following tips can help:
Use only what you need
- Use the least amount of chemical needed on your wipes to get the job done. Using excessive amounts of chemicals with disposable wipers and wiper rags is not only wasteful, but also creates unnecessary exposure to chemicals.
- Educate employees about using wipes with the proper amount of chemical for each job.
- Store wastes properly.
According to OSHA standards, flammable materials, disposable wipers and wiper rags contaminated with flammable materials must be stored in closed metal containers to minimize fire risks. These containers also limit vapor emissions from building up in work areas. To reduce additional exposure and/or explosion potential, OSHA requires in that containers be emptied daily, for example, to a central holding area such as a covered metal 55-gallon drum.

Don't mix wastes
Different types of solvents and chemicals on disposable wipers and wiper rags need to be segregated into separate waste streams. Mixing incompatible wastes can pose serious safety threats. In some instances, mixing incompatible wastes can create hazardous waste. If a container of non-hazardous disposable wipes and rags is contaminated with a wiper or rag containing hazardous waste, the entire container must be labeled hazardous waste. To avoid unnecessary disposal costs and possible fines, make sure to segregate your spent disposable wipers and wiper rags.
Look into alternatives
If your spent disposable wipes and wiper rags contain solvents or chemicals that are considered hazardous waste upon disposal and regulated under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), consider switching to a non-hazardous alternative solvent or chemical. Not only will this help keep your employees safer, but it will also help reduce your hazardous waste disposal costs!
